Union 4th Grade Basketball Team wraps up great year
March 2, 2018

The 4th Grade Union Basketball Team had a spectacular year with an 11-2 overall record and a tournament championship.

The boys participated in the J-League (Jesup League) against Independence, Wapsie Valley, Jesup, Waterloo Columbus, Center Point-Urbana, Janesville and Hudson. After wrapping up the regular season ranked #1 with an 8-2 record, the boys went on to win all three league tournament games.

The team started playing together in second grade, but this marks their first year of official competition together. The boys began working toward this season's goals way back in late October of 2017 and tipped off league play in January.

With a strong team defense and a very high work rate, the boys improved over the course of the season en route to the league tourney title. But it wasn't easy - the boys enjoyed a buzzer beater to defeat a then-undefeated Independence squad during the regular season. Union won the rematch in regulation in the tournament championship game.

Off the court, this year also saw dramatic growth in investment into the Knights Youth Hoops program. Fundraising events organized by local supporters like Krystal Schmitz helped with supplies - among the donations were over two-dozen youth basketballs, a cage to hold them from the UHS boys basketball team, and other accessories like travel bags, jerseys and dry erase boards for coaches.

The team traveled to Cedar Rapids for a stand-alone tournament on February 24 and many players will be participating in 3-on-3 tournaments throughout the month of March.
