The Union golf teams competed in the NICL Conference Meets on Monday, May 7 as the boys competed at home in LaPorte City and the girls in Waterloo on a sunny day.

The Union boys finished sixth overall with a team score of 354. Kyle Cowell placed third overall with a score of 79 to medal, followed by Caleb Reel with 85, Lincoln Mehlert with 90 and Brandon Meyer with 91.

"The highlight for us was Kyle's steady performance that led to a tie for 2nd place," boys coach Ryan Slater said." He got beat by Tyler Converse of Sumner Fredricksburg in the playoff for second, and so he ended up getting 3rd place overall. This is our first player to finish all conference in 10 years or more so to say I was elated and proud of Kyle would be an understatement. He plodded his way around the course as you have to do if you want to avoid big mistakes."

Despite some difficulties on their own course, Slater was optimistic about his young team going forward and into next yar.

"Our four to six players struggled on the front nine with each shooting in the low 50's but backing that up with rounds in the high 40's.," Slater said. "We have a lot of depth and need to bolster those positions in our lineup next year if we want to compete for a team title."

Meanwhile, the Union girls headed over to South Hills Golf Course in Waterloo for their conference meet. The girl's team score of 513 placed them in seventh overall with individual scores as follows: Kaylin Brustkern 119, Brystal Bergmeier 122, Ellie Moore 136, Sydney Bucknell 136.

"For 3 of our golfers, this was the first time they had played 18 holes of golf," coach Mel Barz said. "Overall, I was pleased with our results. We continue to show improvement, but need to show more consistency, so we can get our scores down where they could be, by the time we play regionals on May 21."
