Watermelon Fest returns for second year
August 10, 2018

Fuzz and Jackie Obrosk will bring back Watermelon Fest for the second consecutive year for food, music and family activities on Saturday, August 11 from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., drawing from a childhood memory in Dysart.

"Where the fire station is now, there used to be a feed store and for some reason these guys would go down to Muscatine and come back with a pickup full of watermelons to give away," Fuzz said. 'They would have them in the store with people just eating them and having a good time.

In 2014, Fuzz suffered a stroke that inspired him to do something similar for the community and more. On Saturday, Main Street will be blocked off as Watermelon Fest will feature two bands-Sirens and DM-a watermelon seed spitting contest, bags, hopscotch, hula hooping and more food.

"We decided to go with two bands and more games for everyone," Fuzz said. "We had a hula hoop contest and these two girls just kept going. People were betting on them. We are hoping more people come out and the word of mouth gets it around."

The Obrosk had pictures taken last year from a drone last year and were able to draw people down to Main Street for the event. With the first year long in the books and more entertainment, they hope more will people will stop by.

"The only cost is you bring your lawn chair with you," Fuzz said. "The watermelon is free, but we have food for sale. Free music and we hope it will be nice like it was last year."

Sirens (Plus 1) will perform at 4 p.m. and DM will perform at 7:30 p.m.
